If you’re going to tour a 100-year-old house, there ought to be birthday cake.
That’s exactly what visitors to 1611 S. Hollywood Ave. will find during the Heritage Oak Cliff Home Tour, which takes place Oct. 24-25. Here, birthday cake and champagne will be served under the carport in honor of the Tudor Revival home’s centennial.
The house is in Hampton Hills, which is marking a centennial of its own. The neighborhood remains notable for its concentration of 1920s Tudor Revival homes, full of the steep cross-gabled roofs, prominent chimneys, patterned brickwork, and stone accents characteristic of the period.
Many of the homes were built by Alf Sanders, a prolific Dallas contractor whose work can also be found in the M Streets. His houses helped give Hampton Hills the architectural consistency it retains today.
At 1611 S. Hollywood, many of the original details have survived the ensuing century. Stained-glass windows remain at the front of the house, along with the original butler’s pantry cabinetry and an arched passageway.
