Growing up in the 1990s, some of my fondest fast food memories involved KFC. My mom and I would bring home those iconic red- and white-striped buckets of chicken, along with sides you really couldn’t find anywhere else in our Denver suburb at the time. There were melt-in-your-mouth mashed potatoes, creamy coleslaw, buttery biscuits with packets of butter, and even chocolate cream pies—remember those?
As KFC introduced new menu items throughout my childhood and teenage years, we stayed fans. We had bone-in chicken with its craggy “Extra Crispy” breading, the crave-worthy Twister Wrap, and, later, the ultimate comfort food: the KFC Famous Bowl.
I’ll admit I don’t visit the chain nearly as often as I did back then. But after getting an early look—and taste—of KFC’s first-of-its-kind Open House restaurant, I’m ready to change that. The new concept pairs the classics that made the chain famous with an expansive new menu, specialty drinks, and an entirely reimagined space. For the first time in years, I’m genuinely excited about what’s next for KFC.
