Texas cold front brings freeze threat after brutal heat tonight

A strong cold front will sweep across Texas from Thursday, Oct. 15, into Friday, Oct. 16. It will end a stretch of near record October heat and drop temperatures by as much as 40 degrees in some places. The northern Panhandle could touch freezing Saturday morning. Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston are in line for their coolest air of the season.

Today, CBS Texas forecast feels like temperatures near 103 degrees in North Texas, and the San Antonio Express-News put heat index values between 99 and 102 degrees in San Antonio. The front reaches the Hill Country late Thursday and the Interstate 35 corridor around San Antonio before dawn Friday, according to the Express-News. Houston feels it Friday.

Ahead of the front, isolated strong to severe storms could develop tonight, mainly north and west of the Dallas area, with damaging winds as the main threat. Scattered showers are possible again Thursday afternoon and overnight, mostly west of I-35.
