Fortunate Son, the New Haven-style pizza spot that helped anchor downtown Garland’s revitalized square, is opening a second location in East Dallas at 8686 Ferguson Road, inside a strip center it will share with the bar Whistling Pig. Co-owner Matt Tobin has spent two years trying to bring the concept to this side of town, and the deal finally came together after a neighboring tenant moved out and let the team grab two units at once.
According to the Dallas Observer, Tobin and business partner Josh Yingling noticed a store in the retail strip had closed and leased the adjoining space as well, giving Fortunate Son room to build out a patio in front and around the side. Tobin told the paper, “The people in the neighborhood are great, and we know a lot of them,” a sentiment that tracks with the pair’s long history in East Dallas hospitality. The new restaurant will carry over everything from the original location, though the Ferguson Road build-out will run less than half the size of the sprawling Garland restaurant.
A Filing Fills In the Numbers
A Filing Fills In the Numbers State paperwork fleshes out just how substantial the build-out is. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing reported by WhatNow Dallas shows the Ferguson Road space totals 4,300 square feet, split between 2,811 square feet of interior dining and a 1,489-square-foot patio, with renovation costs estimated at $900,000. That same filing projected renovation completion around October 2026, though Fortunate Son has said only that opening updates will come sometime next year, according to the Observer’s reporting.
Municipal permitting records cited by the Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate show the Suite 200 space near Lakeland Drive previously housed a haircutting salon, Superior Cutz, before it was cleared for restaurant construction. The site sits in a neighborhood strip center anchored alongside Whistling Pig. Tobin told WhatNow Dallas the team specifically targeted the Ferguson Road corridor in Far East Dallas because they saw the densely populated residential area as underserved, even as the corridor undergoes incremental redevelopment.
What’s on the Menu
Fortunate Son built its name on New Haven-style pizza — thin-rolled sourdough crust cooked for five minutes at 650 degrees, a technique that produces the heavily charred, chew-heavy crust traditional to Connecticut apizza, per cravedfw’s culinary breakdown of the style, historically popularized by pizzerias like Frank Pepe and Sally’s. The house sourdough starter even has a name: Fogerty, after John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The signature pie is a clam pizza made with white sauce, fresh clams, mozzarella and lemon, running $25 for a 12-inch and $36.50 for an 18-inch…
