Shelley Luther, the former Dallas salon owner who reopened during the COVID-19 pandemic and faced jail time, is now heading to the Texas State House.
She won the Texas House District 62 seat by defeating Democrat Tiffany Drake with over 75% of the vote.
Luther gained national attention for defying countywide restrictions and was jailed for seven days in 2020. She entered politics after protesting against Governor Abbott when she opened her hair salon in opposition to Abbott’s state-wide order to close salons because of Coronavirus fears.
Her victory marks a significant step in her political journey after previously losing a state Senate race and a Republican primary for the same House seat.
