EPA’s revised Lead and Copper Rule sparks proactive steps by Dallas Water Utilities

Dallas, Texas – Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) is starting a major public health campaign mailing letters to local residents on the state of their water service lines. This action is a part of a national endeavor to follow the updated EPA rules on lead and copper in drinking water.

The EPA’s updated rules, known as the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), were established to enhance the safety and quality of drinking water across the United States. Under these changes, all water utilities—including DWU—must finish a Service Line Inventory by October 2024. This inventory seeks to pinpoint service lines that include lead, galvanized materials, or those whose components are still unknown.

A service line is the pipe joining residential and commercial buildings to a water main. It is divided into two sections: the private side, under the obligation of the homeowner; the public side, kept by the city. Under the new guidelines, should any component of the service line prove to be unknown, the whole line has to be classified as such until more data is at hand.
