Construction continues for First Baptist Dallas’ historic sanctuary

Construction workers started working to preserve some high-value pieces from the church’s historic sanctuary. Meanwhile, they are also demolishing the rest of the building, which was heavily damaged in a July fire.

The 134-year-old sanctuary in downtown Dallas was the primary place of the church’s worship services and was enlarged in 2013. Executive Pastor Ben Lovvorn told the Dallas Morning News they hope the sanctuary’s reconstruction will be completed by Easter 2028.

Lovvorn says they don’t have a cost estimate but their fundraising goal is $95 million. A four-alarm fire destroyed most of the historic sanctuary with firefighters saying the flames started in the basement. Lovvorn says they hope to incorporate two remaining walls into the new building and also plan to use the small amount of stained glass that survived the fire.

The church selected the Dallas design and construction company, The Beck Group, to lead the rebuild.
