Dallas District Attorney will seek death penalty for first time since taking office, sources say

DALLAS — In a significant move, sources tell WFAA that Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot will seek the death penalty for Randy Halprin, a member of the infamous “Texas 7,” during his upcoming retrial. This would mark the first time since taking office in 2019 that Creuzot has pursued capital punishment in any case.

Halprin, 47, was granted a new trial after a Texas appeals court ruled that his original trial was tainted by antisemitic bias from Judge Vickers Cunningham. The appeals court found that Cunningham made repeated antisemitic remarks about Halprin during his trial, which raised questions of judicial impartiality.

Cunningham, who stepped down from the bench in 2005, has denied allegations of bigotry despite previously confirming to the Dallas Morning News that he created a living trust rewarding his children for marrying straight, white Christians…
