Breakthrough in 2020 Arlington Cold Case: Suspect Charged with Capital Murder of Eugene Johnson

The cold case of Eugene Johnson’s murder, unresolved since April 2020, has finally seen a significant breakthrough. The Arlington Police Department announced the arrest of 29-year-old Mekel Gaston in connection with the crime. This comes after an exhaustive investigation led by the APD Homicide Detectives, culminating in Gaston’s apprehension by the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force on May 16, 2025. According to the official report by the Arlington Police Department, Gaston is now facing a capital murder charge and is detained at Tarrant County Jail.
