This Historic Classic Prairie-Style Oak Cliff Duplex Is a Smart Step to Homeownership

Everyone is wondering how to buy a home today. Prices are through the roof. Interest rates don’t look to be dropping anytime soon, so what should you do? In my opinion, you should buy this classic Prairie-style Oak Cliff duplex.

Why? A duplex offers you the rare opportunity to live in a home and rent out part of it, thereby offsetting your mortgage. What could be a smarter investment? And this one offers so much more! The 1924 Oak Cliff duplex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located within the Miller and Stemmons Historic District.

I’ve posted the document below, but pay special attention to this line: “Although similar developments survive in the Oak Cliff, few retain their integrity to such a noteworthy degree.”

From what I can find there have been only three or four owners since 1924, which is always a testament to how well a home lives. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cecil Latimer were perhaps the most well-known. They relocated their Latimer School of Expression and Physical Education here, which was a school of dramatic arts specializing in public speaking, acting, and specialized training for television appearances. By all accounts, it was very successful and operated from the early 1930s until Mrs. Latimer’s retirement in 1956.

This historic Oak Cliff duplex has been beautifully and thoughtfully renovated. In addition to a full remodel, water heaters were updated, and a new roof was installed in 2021. The upstairs balcony was rebuilt and enlarged with commercial-grade steel and concrete in 2022.

In addition to its historic appeal, this century-old Oak Cliff duplex offers even more space outside. There is a 180-square-foot studio with a half bath in the backyard. Think about this as yet another income generator. You could have a tiny house for short-term rental.

As if this deal could not get any sweeter, the walkability factor is off the charts. This Oak Cliff duplex is two blocks from Bishop Arts District and one block from Kidd Springs Park. You can be at Methodist Hospital and downtown in minutes…
