Opal Lee won’t be walking in her annual Juneteenth event

FORT WORTH, Texas — Planning began in January to ensure that Thursday’s Juneteenth Walk in North Texas went off without a hitch, but getting to June 19 was paved with some health and financial hurdles for Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.”

Last year, the city of Dallas got a taste of Lee’s Juneteenth Walk of Freedom. This year, it’s back to where it all started: Funkytown. The event is in Fort Worth, where it all started five years ago.
