Dallas man dies in police custody after erratic behavior and robbery

DALLAS, Texas — A 41-year-old man died in police custody after causing disturbances and committing a robbery in Dallas, according to the Dallas Police Department. The incident occurred on July 13, 2025, and is under investigation by multiple agencies.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Jerrell Johnson, of Dallas, Texas, entered a business on Lemmon Avenue, acting erratically and causing a disturbance. After leaving, he entered a nearby convenience store, confronted employees, and demanded money. Johnson forced a female employee to open the cash register and took the money before continuing to assault her outside, where witnesses intervened until police arrived. Officers found Johnson lying on his back, sweating, and breathing heavily. He was handcuffed and later requested water before becoming unable to sit up without assistance.
