Plano police arrest Romanian national in ATM fraud case

Plano police have arrested a Romanian national suspected of using a sophisticated ATM fraud scheme that trapped cash from multiple victims, including an elderly person, at a financial institution in July.

Ionut Aurel Iova was arrested Aug. 20 in the Houston area during a traffic stop by the Texas Department of Public Safety. He remains in custody at the Department of Homeland Security’s Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe.

Cash trapping involves installing physical blocking devices on ATMs to prevent currency from being dispensed to customers. Believing the machine is broken, victims typically leave to report the problem. Criminals then return to remove the device and steal the trapped money…
