Docuseries reveals hidden finances of religious nonprofits

DALLAS (KDAF) — A new 7-part docuseries explores the financial accountability and transparency of religious nonprofit organizations. The Religion Business, which aims to pioneer a future of financial accountability, is directed by Nathan Apffel and executive produced by Chris Ayoub.

“It’s a global snapshot on religion, particularly in America and the nonprofit sector,” Apffel said. “I was raised in large-scale, nondenominational churches my whole life, and as I aged, I just started asking questions about financials — kind of accountability, and then moral failures in the church and how those moral failures seemed more like crimes to me.”

Apffel said he bought the domain, thereligionbusiness.com, 15 years ago and knew he wanted to do something with it. Now, the film has dissected 3,500 years of history and the legal architecture in the US to expose those who are abusing the generosity of Christians…
