Historic Downtown Dallas high-rise building remains closed to residents after ruptured water line, electrical short

DALLAS — A historic Downtown Dallas high-rise building remains closed to residents after officials say a ruptured water line caused a massive electrical short that led to evacuations earlier this week.

Dallas Fire-Rescue says crews were dispatched to the Mercantile Building at 1800 Main Street in Downtown Dallas shortly before 4 p.m. Oct. 2 after the ruptured water line on the 20th floor impacted an electrical room on the 11th floor of the building and caused an electrical short. The Mercantile Building houses the Mercantile Place residences.

More than 175 occupied residential units had to be evacuated, one first responder was taken to a hospital for heat exhaustion, and four residents were treated on scene for non-life-threatening issues, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue…
