The new Joe V’s Smart Shop is nearing completion at the intersection of TX-183 and N Story Road, marking the first time H-E-B’s discount grocery brand arrives in Irving. Construction began earlier this year, and the store’s red-and-gray façade now signals its upcoming debut. Before this redevelopment, the property served the community for decades as part of Metroplex Plaza, most recently housing a 24 Hour Fitness Sport that closed a few years ago.
This corner of Irving has evolved dramatically over the last four decades—from a stretch of farmland and scattered homes into a major retail hub visible to thousands of commuters each day. The plaza’s first building appeared in the early 1980s, anchoring one of the city’s earliest commercial centers along the Airport Freeway corridor.
2008 – 24 Hour Fitness Sport anchors the plaza
By 2008, the site was thriving with 24 Hour Fitness Sport as its main tenant. The brown-roofed strip mall was typical of early suburban Irving retail centers, with steady parking-lot traffic and clear visibility from the freeway.
2024 – Vacancy after a long run
By mid-2024, the former fitness club sat empty, its entrances boarded up. The large parking area was mostly unused, signaling an impending transition for one of Irving’s most visible commercial properties.
2025 – Redevelopment begins
Construction fencing and equipment arrived as crews began stripping the exterior. The roofline and footprint stayed intact, but a complete façade overhaul was underway.
