New DART chair urges compromise as cities put potential withdrawal on the ballot

Within the past two weeks, four North Texas cities have decided to let voters choose whether to leave Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), a move that could strip hundreds of millions of dollars from the transit system’s budget.

Earlier this month on NBC 5, we reported that several cities were exploring whether to leave the regional transit agency. Now, Plano, Irving, Highland Park, and Farmers Branch have voted to put the question on the May ballot.

If voters approve withdrawal, all DART services in those cities would stop as soon as the votes are certified in May, but their required sales tax payments toward DART-related debt would continue for years…
