Governor Abbott is calling for Dallas and Colin Counties to investigate Islamic groups that he believes are illegally holding Sharia Law Courts. Abbott is accusing the Islamic Tribunal in Dallas and other entities in Colin County of illegally enforcing Shariah law. Abbott claims the U.S. Constitution’s religious protections provide no authority for religious courts to skirt state and federal laws. Attorney Khalid Hamideh represents the Islamic Tribunal and claims there is no basis for the Governor’s claims and that this is the action of a desperate politician attempting to stoke fear and discrimination against Muslims.
