Fredrick Terry wants an East Oak Cliff H-E-B.

Last week, the Dallas City Council approved a zoning request for a new H-E-B at the corner of LBJ and Hillcrest. But Fredrick Terry is lobbying hard for another Dallas store, this time in his East Oak Cliff neighborhood. Once he learned that the company owned a 2.4-acre parcel in Oak Cliff, he began trying to get H-E-B’s attention. He is so invested in convincing the company to plant a store in his food desert that he’s been working for the better part of two years, handing out flyers in English and Spanish to neighbors, attending other store openings, working with neighborhood groups, and spending $8,000 for a mobile billboard.

Terry told Texas Monthly that he had discussions with H-E-B officials, but they quit responding. It doesn’t sound like he’s going to stop trying, though. “I deserve smoked gouda just like everybody else,” he says…
