55-year-old man dies after suffering ‘medical emergency’ while in Dallas police custody, officials say

DALLAS — A 55-year-old man died on Monday after experiencing a medical emergency while in Dallas and Mesquite police custody, officials said.

Mesquite police officers were initially called to a reported theft around 8:29 p.m. at a Family Dollar in the 200 block of Military Parkway, William Griffith, deputy chief with the Dallas Police Department, said in a video posted to social media. Shortly after, officials say Mesquite police officers located the suspect’s vehicle at a separate Family Dollar in the 9500 block of Scyene Rd in Dallas, Griffith said.
