Riverbanks Zoo’s first gorilla babies will move to Dallas Zoo

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — Two young gorillas born at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden are preparing to move to Texas as part of a conservation program.

Moyo and ZaKota, both born at Riverbanks in 2018, will relocate to the Dallas Zoo in March.

The recommendation came from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan Breeding and Transfer Plan.

The program coordinates animal placements among accredited institutions to help maintain healthy and genetically diverse populations.

The brothers were the first successful gorilla births in Riverbanks’ history. Their move follows years of care and training by zoo staff and will allow them to contribute to the broader western lowland gorilla population…
