Dallas man sentenced to 10 years for illegal reentry into the U.S.

DALLAS, Texas — A 36-year-old man from Dallas has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States, according to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas.

Ivan Hernandez-Ortiz, originally from Mexico, was indicted in March 2023 and pled guilty in October 2025 to the charge of illegal reentry after being deported in 2020. U.S. District Judge Ada Brown handed down the 120-month sentence on February 24, 2026. Evidence presented at sentencing revealed that Hernandez-Ortiz had illegally entered the U.S. approximately five times, with three voluntary returns and two formal removals. He was previously prosecuted for illegal reentry in the Southern District of Texas in 2015, receiving a 70-month sentence.

Court records show Hernandez-Ortiz has six felony convictions, including drug trafficking, firearm theft, and sexual abuse of a child. The victim, a 15-year-old female, was identified during a traffic stop by Dallas Police Department officers as a missing child potentially involved in sex trafficking.
