North Texas high school student is the world indoor champion in the 800 at age 17

Cooper Lutkenhaus from Justin Northwest is the world indoor champion in the 800 meters. He’s only 17 years old and is still a junior in high school.

According to NBC 5’s media partners at The Dallas Morning News, it’s one of the most remarkable accomplishments in the history of track and field, and it was done by someone who still attends Northwest and trains there.

Lutkenhaus won Sunday’s 800-meter final at the World Indoor Championships in Poland with a time of 1:44.24. He became the youngest world indoor champion ever, and his time was just outside the top 15 in world indoor history…
