Springfield fire chiefs and paramedics on leave after woman pronounced dead is revived

Springfield Township has placed two paramedics, the fire chief, and the assistant chief on leave after learning that a woman declared dead later was revived, the township administrator announced on social media late Tuesday.

Chief Barry Cousino and assistant Chief David Moore were placed on administrative leave, although they were not at the scene, as were the two unnamed paramedics, wrote Michael Hampton, the administrator.

“This situation is tragic. It should not have happened. We’re sorry it did,” Mr. Hampton wrote.

Township trustees learned Monday of the Jan. 2 incident, he wrote. Paramedics had responded to a 911 call of an unresponsive person possibly suffering a drug overdose at a Toledo address. Springfield Township responded because of the townships agreement with Lucas County to provide emergency medical services, according to the administrator.

Paramedics arrived within four minutes and found the patient unresponsive on a couch, her skin with a blue-gray appearance. A large “pit bull” type dog was growling and unwilling to move from the woman’s side, Mr. Hampton wrote.
