Former Chief of Police in Springfield dies

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio ( WDTN ) — The former longtime police chief for the city of Springfield passed away last week, just days before the city’s former longtime mayor did the same .

Former Police Chief Roger Evans was with the Springfield Division of Police for 34 years before retiring in 1997. He was Chief of Police in Springfield for a decade.

In a post on social media, the Springfield Division of Police spoke on Evan’s impact saying:

His contributions paved the way for positive change, inspiring generations to come. Today, we stand on the shoulders of a giant, remembering a man of truth and integrity.

Services for Chief Evans will be held Friday, Jan. 26, at Greater Grace Temple, 380 W. Leffel Lane. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to noon, with a service to follow.

Ex-Springfield Mayor Warren Copeland died early Monday , Jan. 22. He served for 33 years between 1990-2023, except for a four-year span in the late 1990s.
