DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — The inmate accused of taking a deputy’s gun, fleeing a hospital, breaking into a home and later dying in Dayton has been identified.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the late suspect as Dejuan Johnson, 25. Johnson’s cause and manner of death have yet to be determined by the coroner.
A deputy from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was guarding Johnson on Friday, Jan. 26, at Kettering Health Dayton, formerly Grandview Medical Center. Just after 1 p.m., the inmate reportedly overpowered and “violently” assaulted the deputy.

During the scuffle, at least one shot is believed to have been fired from the weapon while inside of the hospital.
Dayton Assistant Police Chief and Deputy Director Eric Henderson said during a press conference that the inmate took off from the hospital with the weapon and broke into a nearby home on Squirrel Road in Dayton. While inside the residence, police say the armed inmate shot himself.
