Members of the community found out about the incident through phone calls from the immediate family while others from a flood of social media who identified him as Darnell Pate.

2 NEWS spoke with people close to the victim including a former high school classmate Korey Faulks.

“I got a phone call from a friend, told me that Darnell had been shot while working at the nightclub in Jefferson Township,” said Faulks.

He says Pate was a security guard and former police officer, and described him as patient, courageous and easygoing. Faulk says he was a proud and passionate father to his four children.

“It takes a lot of courage for someone to want to do that job that he did,” said Faulks.
