SPRINGFIELD, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Springfield City School District students won’t have school getting in their way of a rare celestial event.

The district announced Thursday, Feb. 1, that its schools will not hold classes on April 8 to allow students to watch the Great North American Eclipse that day.

Springfield has amended its 2023-24 calendar to account for the once-in-a-lifetime event. A Professional Development Day, previously scheduled for April 19, has now been moved to April 8.

School staff will report to work on April 8, but students will have the day off.

The school district will also send recently purchased eclipse eyewear home with students prior to that day so everyone can view the celestial phenomenon safely.
