New DAI exhibit highlights the works of local artist

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — A new exhibit on display at the Dayton Art Institute explores the art of Dayton artist James Pate.

Opening on Feb. 3, the Dayton Art Institute’s new Focus Exhibition features the works of James Pate. More than a dozen of his works will be on view throughout the spring.

Pate’s work addressed societal issues, like the damaging impacts of racism on communities, through a modern and personal take on Cubism. Pate calls it “Techno-Cubism.”

One of Dayton’s own, Pate was previously awarded “Best of Show” during DAI’s 2022 Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms exhibition.

He finds his inspiration in everyday live and conversations with others.

“I really like having conversations with people, going into the conversation and realizing that I’m going to walk away with some concept, some title, some direction for another piece.” Pate said. “An abundance of inspiration comes from a lot of different angles.”

One of the most prominent works featured is a recent large-scale scratchboard image portrait of Bing Davis, a fellow Ohio artist and mentor of Pate’s.
