SPRINGFIELD, Ohio ( WDTN ) — The commercials are iconic: People surprised at their front doors by someone with a large check, a bouquet of flowers and other items. At one point or another, you may even have signed up yourself for a chance to win.
A number of local residents have contacted 2 NEWS claiming to have been targeted in a scam by someone claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House.
Impersonator Alert
Beth Moorman, a resident of Springfield, is one of them.
Just before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, Moorman received a phone call from an individual claiming to be Dave Sayer, a real-life elite member of PCH’s Prize Patrol.
In the initial call, the scammer told Moorman she had won, but was not allowed to tell anyone. The impersonator informed the Clark County woman that a check for $18 million, a briefcase filled with $500,000 cash, flowers and balloons would be delivered to her on the same day around 3:12 p.m.
Moorman decided she was done listening to the lies for the time being, so she hung her phone up. According to the local resident, the fraudster called back a total of at least six to seven more times.
