HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Two Huber Heights police officers were honored as “hometown heroes” tonight for saving a four-year-old’s birthday last week.
The child’s gifts were stolen from his mother’s car while it was unlocked. In a moment of heartbreak, two officers stepped up.
When officers Drew Olinger and Joe Sanchez heard about the boy’s birthday being ruined by a thief, they quickly thought of their own children. The officers did not want to let a child in their community go without presents on their birthday.
Local woman’s phone call takes dark turn
Single mother Jae Ingram had finished shopping for her son Syris’s special day. Then, in an instant, the gifts were gone. She accidentally left the car unlocked.
“Gave Joe a call here and we decided to go find some birthday gifts for him and picked up everything we could find there in the nearest Walgreens and just really excited to get to his house and make his birthday a little bit better,” said Olinger.
Ring camera footage from the Ingram home shows the moment the officers delivered the surprise, making Syris’s fourth birthday one he won’t forget.
