Soaring property taxes becoming growing concern for seniors

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — As property taxes continue to rise across the state, one group has been hit the hardest.

Seniors are having trouble making those higher payments, especially those on a fixed income.

Montgomery County real estate reaches record high value

There are programs at the county level and proposed bills at the state level to help. But for some people, that isn’t enough.

One man told 2 NEWS just staying in his home is a struggle.

“Almost $600,000 a year. Which equates to almost $500 a month. And on a fixed income, on social security and retirement, that is a substantial amount of money,” said Bob Baker, Beavercreek resident.

Those who depend on social security and retirement funds say the property tax increases are putting a strain on their budget.

“Putting a lot of seniors in a lot of financial bind. Having to give up other things just to try and stay in their homes,” said Baker.

Baker has lived in Beavercreek since the 1990s. He says the monthly costs of his property are putting him in a tight financial situation.
