The coalition manages the Greater Edgemont Community Solar Garden, which grows fresh food year-round in its greenhouse. It was founded in 1978 by the neighborhood association and community leaders who wanted to create a community garden.
As food insecurity became a problem, the garden’s mission shifted to addressing hunger in West Dayton.
“When they first started this, there wasn’t a food desert in West Dayton,” Stephen Ross, executive director for the coalition, said. “Now our job is to provide healthy nutritional food, chemically free for the community to actually improve our health.”
The group announced its next initiative to bring fresh food directly to West Dayton neighborhoods called the 200 Yard Garden Project.
