Testimony wraps in trial of men allegedly connected to Dayton detective’s fatal shooting

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Testimony wrapped Monday in the federal trial of two men who allegedly played roles in the death of a Dayton Police detective.

The jury will hear closing arguments Tuesday morning in the trial of Nathan Goddard and Cahke Cortner. DPD Det. Jorge Del Rio was serving a warrant with a DEA task force in November 2019 when he was shot. He died three days later.

The prosecution rested Monday morning after presenting the last of its witnesses, which over the past weeks has included special agents, medical professionals and experts.

Goddard’s defense called only one witness. Courtney Allen was the fourth man found in the basement on Ruskin Road, the scene of the raid, along with Goddard, Cortner and a third, Lionel Combs III.

On the stand, Allen testified about Nov. 4, 2019, detailing when he arrived at the Ruskin Road home up until the moment he saw Del Rio after the shooting, lying at the bottom of the basement stairs.

Allen said that he believed the forced entry from officers was a home invasion until he saw the police markings on Del Rio’s vest.
