Safety, traffic improvements coming to Wayne Avenue this summer

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Dayton city leaders just approved a $2.43 million contract to improve safety along Wayne Ave, an area known to be a problem for both drivers and pedestrians.

The location regularly has high traffic, causing problems for those who cross the street every day. Improvements will happen between Wyoming and Waldo Streets.

City engineers say they noticed a number of rear-end crashes caused by stopped cars waiting for the left turn.

“We’re trying to come up with solutions to mitigate those issues and make it safer. All pedestrians and motorists alike,” said David Escobar, City of Dayton Engineer.

Right now, there are two travel lanes. The safety improvement would add a fifth left turn lane so that drivers won’t have to stop in a travel make to make a left turn.

“It’s allowing vehicles to be removed from the travel lanes and have safety while they’re waiting for turning movements and gaps in traffic,” said Escobar.

Pedestrians say they don’t feel safe walking alongside Wayne Ave, prompting the city to improve safety.
