Great Miami River search for missing man turns from rescue to recovery

DAYTON, Ohio ( WDTN ) — Dayton Fire crews have ended their search for a man in the Great Miami River for the evening.

Citing darkness and safety, the department called it a night around 9 p.m. Thursday, saying it would resume the search in the morning with sonar and dive teams.

In announcing the pause, Dayton Fire also said that the operation has switched from trying to rescue the man to the recovery of his body.

According to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch, crews received a call to respond to the bikeway along the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton around 4 pm. 911 calls reported an adult man in the water.

A full water response was deployed as crews began to work on identifying the location of the missing man.

A full search included multiple boats on the water, searching nearby riverbanks, and utilizing SONAR devices to aid the searched. Underwater dive resources were requested from the Wright-Patterson AFB Fire Department Dive Team.
