“This has been a unique challenge for a few years. I don’t think any system, whether it be Springfield or anywhere else is built with extra headroom or extra capacity,” said Chris Cook, Clark County Health District Commissioner.

Springfield’s healthcare providers have been struggling for the last several years to accommodate longtime residents as well as new arrivals.

Cook says there are many challenges when treating members of the immigrant community.

One of the biggest areas they’re seeing the most strain is in infant care. Many new mothers and newborns in the immigrant community aren’t used to receiving both pre- and post-natal care.
