Miami Valley church collecting water for Asheville

BUTLER TWP., Ohio (WDTN) – A Miami Valley church is collecting cases of bottled water to deliver to Asheville, North Carolina, where thousands are still without drinking water.

Russ Harris, a long-time member of Polk Grove United Church of Christ, started the drive after seeing the devastation Hurricane Helene left behind in the Asheville area.

He said his parents taught him the importance of giving at a young age, and he continues to help people to this day.

“I think as long as you have a compassion in your heart and love in your heart for other people, this comes pretty easy,” Harris said.

A trailer to collect cases of bottled water is located at Polk Grove United Church of Christ at 9190 Frederick Pike in Dayton. The door will be open to drop off water from 6 a.m. until dark, or cases can be left beside the trailer.

The church will accept donations now through Wednesday, Oct. 16.

“It’s all about loving your neighbor,” Harris said.

Once the collection ends, Harris and others will drive to North Carolina to deliver the water to a church they’ve partnered with to distribute the water to people in need.
