What was formerly known as Coward Avenue near West Third Street is now Joe Madison Way.

Madison was born in Dayton and best known for being “The Black Eagle” on SiriusXM’s show, Urban View.

He began his career as the youngest president of any NAACP chapter when he took over the Detroit office.

City leaders, family and longtime friends of Madison gathered this past week to share stories of his legacy and celebrate the street dedication.

“This is a tribute to Joe. That way, this city and anyone who knows anything about Joe can honor him in perpetuity,” said John Austin, Roosevelt class of 1967.

Madison died earlier this year at the age of 74.
