SOUTH CHARLESTON, Ohio ( WCMH ) — The Clark County Sheriff’s office is investigating after two children got a hold of a handgun, resulting in one of the children being shot.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies and officers from the South Charleston police department responded to a call at an apartment on Sunset Court at approximately 6:46 a.m. Wednesday morning.
At the scene, law enforcement officers found the mother with the two children – two brothers, ages 4 and 6 – at a neighbor’s apartment.
The 6-year-old managed to get hold of a 9mm handgun “from an area that was thought to be secure,” the sheriff’s office said. The two children then played with the gun, during which it fired once and grazed the 4-year-old in the arm. The sheriff’s office said that after the bullet hit the child, it hit some blankets and lodged into the carpet of the floor of a closet where the boys were playing with the gun.
The 4-year-old was treated at the scene, but then taken to the hospital as a precaution.
