WILMINGTON, Ohio (WANE) — A judge sentenced an Ohio man who played a role in poaching an 18-point white-tailed deer in 2023 to 90 days in prison, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
Described as the “ringleader” in a “high-profile” case of deer poaching, 28-year-old Christopher “CJ” Alexander of Wilmington, Ohio, will also have to pay $43,000 in penalties, restitution and court costs for his actions.
Three other people — identified as 29-year-old Corey Haunert, 31-year-old Zachary Haunert and 37-year-old Kristina Alexander — previously received sentences for aiding CJ.
A deer’s point refers to the number of branches on its antlers. An 18-point deer is considered a “trophy animal,” according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office
“Hunting in Ohio is a time-honored tradition, and there is a proper way to be safe and successful,” said Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost in a press release Wednesday. “When bad actors like these guys try to cheat the system, it ruins the reputation of Ohio’s respected sportsmen and women — I can’t stand for that.”
