Firefighters rescued kittens from a Vandalia apartment while on a call Thursday.

Vandalia fire crews responded to 101 East Van Lake Drive for a medical call, according to Vandalia Fire Division Chief Chad Follick.

While on scene, crews discovered that the stairs outside of the building failed and required emergency repair.
The residents were relocated to a nearby motel as the repairs are going to take longer than expected, Follick said.
Some people wanted to get their cat and kittens out of the apartment but were not allowed to re-enter.
Vandalia Ladder 3 crews used a ground ladder to rescue the cats.
