BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) — The Beavercreek Police Department is warning residents of an uptick of brushing scams in the area.
The department says that they’ve received an increase in reports of brushing scams.
The scam involves someone receiving items that they did not purchase themselves. The scam often leaves people with unwanted items, a surplus amount at that. The items arrive with a shipping address, but lack a return address in cases. When the items are shipped with a return address they are usually labeled to a retailer.
The scammer sending the items is typically an international, third party seller looking to make it seem as if they have a bevy of customers. The scammer then writes a positive review on behalf of the person receiving the unwanted items.
Payments go out in $100M Verizon settlement, but people are disappointed
While the person being scammed is receiving free items in most cases, the trade-off is that their personal information has been compromised and will likely be used in other fraudulent activity.
