Casey Camp donates Civil War sword to History Center

On Jan. 21, the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Henry Casey Camp 92 Commander Kelly Hopkins donated on behalf of the camp, a model 1860 Light Cavalry Sabre and scabbard dated 1864, to the Clinton County History Center.

Accepting the sword on behalf of the center was the executive director, Shelby Boatman. The History Center is hoping to have the sword on display with the new Civil War exhibit.

The sword belonged to a Sgt. John W. Shepp, of Reesville, Ohio, and enlisted first in the 60th Regiment, OVI Company D. After completing his tour, he re-enlisted in the 175th Regiment, OVI, Company D. Sgt. Shepp had been a Prisoner of War at Anderson and also part of Sherman’s March to the sea…
