Butler County Sheriff warns of scam impersonating law enforcement

BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) — The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents about a prevalent scam involving a caller impersonating law enforcement. The scammer claims to be Lieutenant Michael Thomas from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, warning individuals that they have missed a grand jury appearance and must call back to avoid an arrest warrant.

Victims who return the call are instructed to pay a fine to prevent arrest. Sheriff Richard Jones emphasized the seriousness of the scam, noting that “people are so scared they go to the bank,” and some have “gave up fortunes.”

Authorities advise that legitimate notifications regarding grand jury appearances are sent via mail and are public records that can be verified through Butler County courts.
