New driving law targets gap in training for older teens

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Under a new driving law that took effect Tuesday, new drivers 18-20 will now have to take a driver’s education course and spend time behind the wheel to get their license.

No longer will they be able to walk into the BMV, take the written test and skip straight to the road test. Now, just like the 16- and 17-year-olds looking to drive, they will have to fulfill the driver’s ed and supervised driving requirements.

Ohio minimum wage will increase in 2026

The requirements are not necessarily new: 24 hours of driver’s education classes as well as 50 hours of drive-time, with 10 of those being at night. Prospective drivers will also need eight hours of supervised time behind the wheel.

To help monitor that time, a new free app called “RoadReady Ohio” was released, through which you can log your driving hours and track speed and braking behavior. It also has info to answer any questions…
