Feds propose settlement with Cleveland-Cliffs over Middletown facility’s hazardous waste

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Justice has proposed a settlement to Cleveland-Cliffs Steel Corp. over the cleanup of hazardous waste released by its Middletown Works facility in southwest Ohio.

A news release from the Justice Department says the proposal would have Cleveland-Cliffs perform “long-term corrective measures” at the 2,600-acre integrated steel mill in Middletown, just south of Dayton.

“This settlement shows the administration’s commitment to protecting the health and safety of the public, including workers at the Middletown Works,” Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division said in a statement…
