Labor Day weekend: Summer finale means busy roads and Atlanta airport

The last hurrah of the summer will mean yet another packed weekend at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and on Georgia’s roads. It’ll also mean lots of big events throughout metro Atlanta.

AAA forecasts domestic travel will be up 9% nationally over Labor Day weekend compared with last year. Hartsfield-Jackson is preparing to handle more than 2.3 million travelers during the Labor Day travel rush.

The busy holiday period starts Wednesday and runs through Sept. 4.

Not only will there be crowded highways and airport concourses, but the city will play host to some of its biggest events of the year. Hotels and restaurants will be packed for the weekend convergence of DragonCon, the sci-fi and fantasy convention, the Aflac Kickoff Game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers, and Black Atlanta Pride weekend.

Get there early

The peak day at Hartsfield-Jackson is expected to be Friday, when more than 349,000 people are expected to travel to, from or through the Atlanta airport.
