Atlanta teen dead, 6 injured in shooting on Albany State campus, officials say

Gunfire erupted during homecoming weekend at Albany State University, leaving an Atlanta teenager dead and six others injured, officials confirmed Sunday.

Details are limited, but the shooting happened on campus at about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement shared by ASU Interim President Dr. Lawrence M. Drake II.

“As always, the safety and security of our ASU students, faculty and staff are the number one priority of this institution,” Drake said. “We have been informed that six individuals have sustained injuries. Sadly, one has been reported deceased.”

The victim was identified as 19-year-old De-Morion Tayshawn Daniels, according to Dougherty County Corner Michael Fowler. Daniels is from Atlanta, the coroner said.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley told Albany’s WALB-TV that they didn’t yet have a motive for the shooting, which happened near the C.W. Grant Student Union on the university’s east campus during homecoming weekend. Some of the injured victims were treated at the student union, but if was unclear whether any were students, the station reported.
