CONYERS – The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved an ordinance that targets individuals participating in and observing illegal street racing.
The new county ordinance makes it unlawful for any person to knowingly act as an organizer in illegal street racing, reckless driving or reckless stunt driving exhibition, as well as participate in or be a spectator of these events. Property owners who knowingly allow these activities to occur on their property can also be fined.
Each violation of the ordinance can result in a fine of up to $1,000, 60 days of imprisonment or both. Any motor vehicle used to participate in illegal street racing or other reckless driving activities will be removed and impounded by law enforcement for at least 30 days.
Rockdale County has seen a recent increase in street racing, and the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office has sent a clear message that it will not be tolerated. The city of Conyers passed a similar ordinance against street racing in March 2024. The BOC also passed a juvenille curfew ordinance in August 2024 that applies to minors 16 years old or younger following a street racing stop that resulted in a high-speed chase with police.
